What do all those words in a Turkish fund name mean?
A Turkish fund name looks impenetrable and is actually highly structured. Once you know the pattern, the name alone tells you most of what a factsheet would.
Take a real one:
AK PORTFÖY AMERİKA YABANCI HİSSE SENEDİ FONU
Read left to right, it decomposes as: issuer → strategy → asset class → legal type.
The parts
1. The issuer (kurucu). Almost always first, and almost always ends in Portföy — the portfolio management company. Here, Ak Portföy. This is where the biggest trap for a newcomer sits: the issuer is usually the asset-management arm of a bank, and its name is not the bank's. Ak Portföy is Akbank's. İş Portföy is İş Bankası's. If you bought a fund in a bank app and cannot find the bank's name anywhere on the fund, this is why.
2. The strategy or theme. Amerika (America), Teknoloji (technology), Altın (gold), Kısa Vadeli (short-dated). Free-text, and the most informative part.
3. The asset class. A controlled vocabulary worth learning:
| Turkish | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Hisse Senedi | Equity |
| Borçlanma Araçları | Debt instruments |
| Para Piyasası | Money market |
| Kıymetli Madenler | Precious metals |
| Fon Sepeti | Fund of funds |
| Katılım | Participation (interest-free) |
| Değişken | Variable / unconstrained |
| Karma | Mixed |
4. The legal type. Fon or Fonu ends most names. Two suffixes change what you are allowed to buy:
- (Hisse Senedi Yoğun Fon) — equity-intensive. A tax classification, not a marketing phrase: it requires a minimum equity weight and has historically carried favourable withholding.
- Serbest — hedge-style. Frequently restricted to qualified investors, whatever the platform shows you.
The modifiers that change the answer
- Yabancı — foreign. The fund invests outside Turkey.
- (TL) / (Döviz) — lira- or FX-denominated. Note this describes the unit, not necessarily the exposure.
- Özel — a private fund, sold to a defined group, not to the public.
- Emeklilik Yatırım Fonu — a pension fund, buyable only inside a pension contract.
Back to the example
AK PORTFÖY AMERİKA YABANCI HİSSE SENEDİ FONU = an Akbank-group fund, investing in America, in foreign equities. Which is exactly what it does — and you now know that without opening the factsheet.
